Best Film Nomination BAFTA Scotland 2009
In 1988, following an Iraqi chemical gas attack on the Kurdish town of Halabja that killed 5000 people, freedom fighter Peri Ibrahim buried his best friend and his Kalashnikov and headed to the west. In 2004, documentary maker Doug Aubrey met Peri Ibrahim in Scotland and together they travelled back to a newly liberated Iraqi Kurdistan and Halabja. Filmed over an intensive 5 year period, Kurdî tells the touching story of a man trying to reconcile his life’s journey with his devotion to country that doesn’t exist.
Doug Aubrey is best known for his internationally acclaimed documentaries including Victim of Geography, World of Skinhead, A Different Pitch, See You in the Next War and A Glittering Haze. “In an attempt to simply fit in and assimilate in the western world …a lot of asylum seekers and refugees won’t talk. Kurdi is a film about one of these people in search of a past, a present and, even though we didn’t know it at the time, a future…”
DAVID THE TOLHILDAN / DAVID TOLHILDAN
Director: Mano Khalil
Switzerland 2006 / 54m / French, German and Kurdish (Kurmanji) with English subtitles
Ursula Roiller’s son, David, went missing in 2001, after telling his family he was making a trip to Paris. Gradually, information filtered through to his mother that David had gone to Kurdistan to join the Kurdish resistance movement PKK. He had given up a comfortable and safe life as the son of a former president of the Lausanne Federal Court in Switzerland for the hardships and dangers of the Kurdish mountains. When film maker Mano Khalil met Ursula Roiller in 2005 he became interested in the story and agreed to look for David. The true story which emerged provides a realistic view of the current situation of the Kurdish freedom movement and raises many questions for its audience – about loyalty, freedom, violence and love.
Ev portreyeke belgawer ya David Rouiller, e. David Rouiller, ciwaneke Swîs e û ew tevlî tevgera azadiya Kurdistan –PKK bû. Kurekî serokê berê yê Dadgera Bilindtirîn ya Swîsa Federal, dev ji jiyaneke xweshal û ewle ya li Swîsê ber dide û diçe dikeve nava jiyaneke tijîzor û zehmet û xeternak ya li serê çiyayên Kurdistanê. Çîrokeke rastîn e ku pirsan dertîne holê di derbarî siyanet, rûmeta mirovahiyê, pistgirî, azadî û sîdetê de.
