In May, the class watched a number of Kurdish short films, they rated these under a number of headings and the most popular of these are being shown here.

PHONE STORY / ÇÎROKA TELEFÛNÊ

Phone Story

Belgium /2009 / 16 mins /  Dir:  Binevsa Berivan / French and Turkish with English subtitles

Festival du Film Européen de Bruxelles (Belgique), Grand Prix. Festival du Film Européen de Lille (France),  Prix du jury européen

Live Action Drama set in modern day Brussels.

The film starts with a man who owns a shop that he lets people come in and use the phone booths that he has and they can ring home to other countries and they pay him for it. This girl comes in everyday and he fancies her – he listens in to her phonecalls and he gets to look forward to her coming everyday and when she doesn’t come he gets really upset. Then she comes in the next day and she is going through a really tough time and she might not be able to stay in the country anymore. The next day she doesn’t come in and it is because she has been deported – we think. The theme of the film is remorse I think, as a short film I enjoyed it thoroughly and would recommend it.

Best short film Zagreb Film Festival 2009

Live Action Film about identity, loss and war set during the
American invasion of Iraq in 2003.

A Kurdish family are waiting during the Iraq war under their collapsed house in their basement for the help of the American troops, while bombs fall down around their house. Whille all this goes on around them, this film follows their own small problems they face with each other while trapped in such a small place. The Iraqi Kurdish family consists of a grandfather, mother, father and two children. The film is shot in black and white and this reflects how dark and dull life is for this trapped family. There is also an element of comedy to this short film surrounding the cigarettes, the grandfather denies stealing the fathers fags but is seen in the final picture smoking one. There is a very good technique used in this film which is the use of pictures – the son has a camera which he uses to take pictures and these pictures depict the scene, The last picture taken by the family depicts a happy family before they are bombed, this is not actually shown but it is assumed. This is my favourite film out of all the Kurdish films we have watched as it has an element of humour as well as sadness.I would recommend it as it shows the true horrors experienced by Kurdish families.
